I am running conduit (about 250 feet) to provide for 70 amps of service to an inlaw unit at my house. I am also running telephone, cable and doorbell wire to the same location. The conduit would be run underground with no concrete above. Can anyone tell me the required depth and size of the conduit? Also, is there a limit to the number of 90 degree turns allowed per the NEC?

The city inspector would have the information regarding the depht of the conduit, it vary from city to city. The NEC restricts you to 360 degrees of bend, refer to art. 346-10 or 347-14.

jsherwood I do not want to seem rude, however

This site is designed for:

Contractors
Electricians
Engineers
Inspectors
Instructors
Other electrically related individuals.

The question you are asking has to many variables to give "just a homeowner" an answer to.

I hope you mean conduits as in more than one, phone and cable have no place with a feeder.

I would recommend you get a contractor to aid you with this installation.

I don't mean to seem rude either; however, what's your definition of:

Other electrically related individuals?

Do you think that if I, "just a homeowner" as you put it, wants to add a circuit to my house service, that I should hire a contractor?

This individual's question was certainly lacking details; however the question was specific to conduit depth, and the initial reply was satisfactory.

I see no need or place for your reply; much like you probably have no need for mine. This site is open to anyone (a.k.a. "Other electrically related individuals") not just "contractors" to ask specific questions regarding the NEC.

Rdickey, Iwires reference was to the opening page of this site, with this said why don't you give us your discription of "Other electrically related individuals."

There are many "How To" books on the market that DIYers can buy along with the library.

For a DIYer to stand and tell an inspector that some guy named Rdickey told him how to do this installation (that failed) on an electrical professionals forum, and failing this just can't be, would say alot about your instructional skills wouldn't it.

But, if you feel this is the place for this type of instruction to be given you can send jsherwood a PM.

"just a homeowner" is from jsherwood's own personal profile.

To add a circut to a house service requires a certain level of skill and knowledge. It is hard to know the qualifications of "just a homeowner" and sometimes the best advise is to recommend a contractor's aid for the safety of everyone.

rdickey I have no trouble with your post, join in the forum. :)

As Roger said

Also
"just a homeowner"
comes from jsherwood profile.

If he had asked for the burial depth for a branch circuit to a lamp post I would be glad to help him.

What he wants to do is run a feeder 250' between two buildings.

Why 70 Amps?

Voltage drop?

Ground Rods?

EGC or not?

Bond or not bond?

What type of conductors?

Disconnect switch(s)?

There is a lot more to this than the average home owner would know or should attempt.

Just my opinion, Bob

"Other Electrically Related Individuals" can appear like a very broad term.
Maybe it should read "Other Electrically Qualified Individuals".

jsherwood,
your conduit size will be based on the size of your conductors, not the size of the breaker.
Burial depth will depend on type of conduit and location. See table 300.5

Iwires reply is appropiate. I wonder on these type homeowner questions what else is not asked. One way to answer is to give the code section as Luke did. If they don't have an NEC they probably are not "electricaly related individuals", and should find someone who is.
