I have an installation with some cable tray (brand unknown) which is more of a corrugated metal type than a "ladder" type.
The side walls are approximately 4" high and the E/C entered with 2" conduit by punching a hole in the side wall.
This seems to be a violation of 392.6(J), but I have not have extensive CT experience.
Comments.

Aug, we have always used a cable tray to conduit clamp made for the purpose. You can enter from the bottom (if it is rung type tray) or from the top rail. The clamp is similar to a corn clamp.
