I am using a 24 or 36 pair 300V multiconductor to run to instruments in a remote shed. Does this fall under the 40% fill for >2 conductors, or can I use 53% since there is only cable to pull in?

One cable equals one conductor. Here's the Chapter 9 reference:

(9) A multiconductor cable or flexible cord of two or more
conductors shall be treated as a single conductor for
calculating percentage conduit fill area. For cables that
have elliptical cross sections, the cross-sectional area
calculation shall be based on using the major diameter
of the ellipse as a circle diameter.

Aha, you got it. Thanks for finding that reference, it is hidden in all the chapt 9 commentary of my book. That's the one problem with the handbook. Thanks again!
