At our jobsite we are installing cable tray for telecom cabling. When we stop at a wall we are using 4" emt as sleeves. My question is does this conduit have to be grounded and if so does it have to be grounded on both sides of the wall.

Thanks,Joe

Re: conduit grounding

Hello-

If the conduit is entering the TR room than it must be grounded. If its a sleeve thru a wall and less than 2 feet than it doesn't need to be grounded. As always if it easily be grounded I do it anyways. These grounding requirements are not NEC but from Bicsi standards. To answer you second question IF you had to ground the conduits than "yes" both sides.

Re: conduit grounding

These sleeves are around 4' long but do not go into the TC.The cable tray stops at about 1'-2' from the wall. What if it was a 10' piece of conduit just running above the ceiling down a hallway? Finally when does conduit and cable tray need to be grounded?
Thanks again,
Joe

I am curious why you think it might need to be grounded on both sides.

if its a short stub it can be left ungrounded in most cases, but over a certain lenmgth requires an effetcive bond.

Re: conduit grounding

The reason I ask about the grounding on both ends of the sleeve is that if one of the grounding bushings become loose then the conduit is still grounded at the other end. I do alot of work on government sites and I see this being done all over.

Thanks,
Joe
