you can't put sewer pipe and potable water pipe in the same trench though.
and some places do not allow you to put electrical wiring in the same trench as gas piping.

2000 UPC 720.0 does allow water & sewer in the same trench!!! 720.0 Building Sewers or drainage piping of clay or materials which are not approved for use w/in a building shall not be run or laid in the same trench as the water pipes UNLESS BOTH of the following requirements are met:
(1) The bottom of the water pipe SHALL be at least 12" above the top of the sewer or drain line.
(2) the water pipe shall be placed on a solid shelf excavated at one side of the common trench w/a min. clear horizontal distance of at least 12" from the sewer or drain line.
Note: It does not say anything about A.B.S. Piping having to meet these requirements
I think that the only place you will find that it's not allowed in the same trench is in the public utilities books.
now does anybody have a good reason for not allowing water and electric in the same trench? what about rain and or ground water?

Because having to dig around electric lines to repair the water pipe makes that repair more dangerous and difficult.

Same Trench?
Lay the pipe at least 12 inches apart as per the codes, fill the trench in with backfil, and it is no longer a trench, but earth - with the different utilities at least 12 inches apart
