Are conduit sleeves required by the NEC for all wall/ ceiling penetrations or is this just good engineering practice. If required, what section(s) describe this?

Re: conduit penetrations/sleeves

Are you asking if you should run conduit through a conduit sleeve or are you asking about low voltage cables?

If you are proposing to run conduit, AC, or MC through a sleeve you are actually creating a bigger problem.

If you are talking about LV cables there are assemblies that don't require sleeves here either.

You can see any particular manufacturers (ie 3M, Hilti, Rectorseal etc...) assemblies in their tech literature or the UL orange books.

Leon, these articles do not answer the question.

Here is one example of a sleeveless cable assembly from Specified Technologies.

You can search all the assemblies in the UL FIRE RESISTANCE DIRECTORY at www.UL.com

Re: conduit penetrations/sleeves

Roger, I was required to install metal sleeves through a block wall when running EMT with power conductors. We were running 4" EMT, so we used 6" GRC sleeves, which had to extend 1" through each side of the wall. The sleeves were patched in with mortar, and then the conduits were fire-caulked within the sleeves. This is the spec for the plant. What would be a problem with this installation? Would this affect impedence in the equipment grounding path? The EGC system on this conduit is pretty good, with a separate EGC per 250.122, and bonding bushings on either end, per plant spec.

Re: conduit penetrations/sleeves

I'm bumping this thread back to top. Roger mentioned that running conduit through a sleeve would be creating a problem. Roger, could you clarify that and also read my previous post? I'd like to understand this better, thanx.

Chris,

I Believe What Roger Is Saying Is That Per The UL Fire Resistance Directories A Sleeve Is Not Required And Is Just Adding Another Location That You Need To Seal For Firestopping.
With That Being Said If It Is A Specification Driven Requirement Like You Are Speaking Of It Needs To Be Done. I Always Offer Deducts To Remove These Sleeves On Projects That I Work On Because I Do Not See The Need For Them.
