Conduit requirements for class 2 and class 3 circuits

Are class 2 and 3 circuits permitted to be exposed? I can't find it anywhere saying they are required to be run in conduit.

Think about all the door bells and thermostats not run in conduit.

725.3 Other Articles. Circuits and equipment shall comply
with the articles or sections listed in 725.3(A) through
(J). Only those sections of Article 300 referenced in this
article shall apply to Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 circuits.
 
I agree with Bob and they can be spliced without the need for junction boxes too. Also think about zone valves on a boiler.
