Nowaday there are lot of installation with data/communication cable running throughout the building. Is there any rule or code requirement about the minimum seperation between electrical circuit conduit and data/communication conduit? Some people said it requires min 12 inches. Is this correct?

Welcome to the forum.:)

There is no NEC required separation distance between power raceways and communications and data raceways.

Chris

We work in one jurisdiction that has an ammendment that requires us to keep a 2" seperation. That becomes common place, and we do it on all jobs.

And the logic in that, some inspector THOUGHT? And now it is a local admenment.

Well its a old rule underground mostly in boiler plate specs but telephone wire is out and fiber optics is now , But needs to be changed !

They seperated ac wiring from telephone wiring in the old days do to AC hum on the tele lines.

But you dont get AC hum with fiber optics not in this life time .

In addition if its in conduit thats a kinda magnetic shield but when we do jobs today the engineers put in the specs 12 inch from other raceways underground or overhead of long distance parallel runs if data com conduits cross other power conduits it can be min 3 inches but its not a issue today .

We always install comm/data duct banks 4 feet from power duct banks running parallel underground per engineer .

But when your doing underground downtown street work they run parallel next to each other so its a local thing .

One county to the next has there own rules some we pour data conduits in concrete encased some we dont .

Some data com conduits underground get a ground rod every 50 foot with a 2/0 layed on top but its of no value do to it being FIBER OPTICS .

OLD RULE !

Prolly.

But, it is an ammendment that is adopted by that jurisdiction's Electric board.

Well because it cost money to change most amendments to improve or to correct what is really needed outdated rules for improvement we follow our leaders blindly because they have no glue to how or what there talking about .

And they today design buildings with multiple computer data/ com outlets in every room or thousands of data cables in cable trays and run free wire from tray across every conduit in ceiling overhead and its not in the specs to separate these .

Its 2010 now rewrite your old adopted outdated theorys
