Hi all,

A contractor installed conduits stubbing out of a concrete pad that is intended for use as a future dugout. The conduits reach about 12" above the pad. I am concerned about safety of kids horsing around / falling on it etc. Any suggestions as to what to do? Is there a code that prohibits this?

Thanks!

Frame in around them, blocking them off. For the time being, rebar caps would work:

By frame you mean some wood 2x4s? I don't know if anyone will be up for nailing into their new concrete pad, but I could see just setting the wood cage over it and letting gravity do its trick. Thanks!

You're welcome.

Yes, a wood cage over it would work. You could always hammerdrill the pad, install concrete anchors with the plastic inserts holding "L" brackets, and secure the cage to the concrete that way. Maybe even make a bench seat out of it.

As for NEC code issues, there are none that I know of. I would put a piece of duct tape over the ends of the conduit to keep out trash, rain, mud daubers, or anything else that might get in there.

What kind of pipe? PVC? I'd cut them off as short as possible and put pvc caps on them. Rigid? I'd also cut them off lower and put a threadless connector and a threaded plumbing cap on them.

orange traffic cones. use the large ones, so if someone falls on them,
there is some scooch......

to keep them from disappearing, set some plastic anchors
into the concrete, and screw them down.

make sure you cap them off permanently like, or kids will fill them full of #@it. cut them at 2" if you like first.

He said kids would be in the vicinity so I would be more worried about them filling with juice boxes, candy wrappers, rocks, broken sneaker shoe laces, snotty tissues, and the like. And in this case, the duct tape won't last long. :)
