Can someone tell me where in the NEC that it says conduit shall follow the building lines? I've always thought that's what the code says, but now I can't find it in there.

Its not in the NEC but its commonly in the boiler plate specifications they seem to use in all education / municipal / gov projects.
Here is an example from the VA:
In quite a few places you'll see it "Align and run conduit parallel or perpendicular to the building lines."
