Does the underground conduit to electric vehicle charging station needs to be certain type?
 
I think it depends on the installation details and the location where it being installed.
 
To comply with NEC, any raceway that is permitted to be direct buried is fine.

A couple off top of my head that can not be direct buried are FMC and ENT, and believe it or not I think EMT will be permitted to be direct buried in 2017 NEC.

I believe EMT has been approved for direct burial for years, with corrosion protection. 358.10(B).

You are correct. I believe there was a change in 2017 though, but can't tell you for certain as I don't have a 2017 yet. This from recollection from discussion in a CEU I attended. From that discussion, apparently today's EMT is better corrosion resistance then it used to be is the reason for the change. Not sure I agree with that nor did most in the class, but that is what I recall being presented.
 
We've always used PVC Sch. 40 direct burial in the past.

Many EV chargers require Ethernet as well, and double units typically require separate circuits. You may already know this...I learned it the hard way.
