Conduit with black iron pipe

In an industrial application, I need to run both 3/4" rigid conduit and 1/2" black iron pipe vertically (approx 20 ft.) to several machines. Is it permissable to run this conduit and pipe close together (2 or 3 inches apart) connected with clamps at 8 foot vertical intervals for added strength and to preserve straightness?

The simple answer is yes, if you are not asking whether the clamps mentioned are the only means of securing it to the wall, but I would like to turn it around and ask you, "Why do you think it wouldn't be OK?"

Conduit and process piping are run on the same racks in close proximity all the time. Take a look in any plant and you'll see....

Sorry, I should have mentioned that these runs will not be down a wall, they will be in open air in an open factory bay, separate runs of one conduit and one pipe to each machine. Several machines are to be installed. All conduit and pipe will be indepedently supported at top and bottom. My question is, is it permissable to connect them together with clamps on the way down to preserve straightness?

It is allowed to run the pipes very close to each other but, you may not use the electrical conduit as a means of support for the black pipe. By clamping the two together with out other means of support that is what you are doing.

Again my question why would you think it would not be?

No, conduit can not be used as support (as described).

What you say is correct, but it does not apply to this description. As long as the black iron pipe is not supported by EMT conduit, and the conduit is supported at the correct intervals per the NEC ( I know there is a special code that directly addresses drops for industrial machinery Just don't know where right now) They can be strapped together as much as you want to.
