i need an answer to a test question that i didn`t understand.---------question------the cubic inch of a outlet box with 1 hickey + 2 straps is decreased by-------A) 2 --- B) 3 --- C) 4 --- D) amount of conductors intering box. hope someone can help-----DECREASED has me stumped.

314.16(B)(2) says one or more internal clamps requires a single volume allowance
314.16(B)(3) says one or more hickeys are preasent, a single volume allownace is required

1 single + 1 single= 2

when you deal with box fill you have to deal with the volume. If the volume of the box is 22 cu. in athen 11 #14 can enter the box because you must use 2.0 cu.in for each wire. 2.0*11= 22 cu.in.

Now if there is a device in the box then the volume must be decrease by 2 #14. If there is a clamp you must decrease by another #14 and so on. Thus with a device and a clamp the total # of 14 gauge wires has been reduce by 3 . This leaves 8 #14 wires (11-3=8)

This is what I call a strap.

Its a bad question. If it were a strap for a device then the answer would be 5 but there is no choice for that answer. My guess is A) 2.

Trick ?

Trick ?

Could it be a trick question? 314.15(B)(4) says "For each yoke or strap containing one or more devices or equipment". The question in the OP mentions nothing about a device associated with the strap ie receptacle or switch.
