confusion with the electrical prep text

Unit 2 Question 5? Not sure how to arrive at the same answer.
Unit 2 Question 6? the total resistance I thought ... should be Rt=R1xR2/R1+R2, But the answer only used the Supply Resistance.
Is this book correct or ?
