Connecting 120V generator to panel with interlock

I have a 5000 watt generator cable of 4000 running but only has a 30amp 120v output not 240. Can I use a 30amp 4 prong box out of electrical box but only use 1 pole essentially half of my box dead to do this. What size wire for this and do I just use a single pole 30amp breaker?
