It seems to be really secure to take a stranded neutral or ground conductor and separate it into groups of two strands and connect each two wire set under a screw in a terminal strip, instead of buying and installing a large terminal which is secured to the strip with just one small terminal screw. Where is separating the strands prohibited in the NEC?

Not going to find you the number but it will be along shortly.
It is a violation. The rating for the wire is under 1 terminal. This has been brought up before.
Might also mention that for other than grounding you can not put 2 wires under 1 set screw
