I mounted a 10 pole contactor in a 12 x 12 jb. THe inspector said this is illegal because it should be in its own approve housing. Has anyone seen this before.

I can't think of a reason for not allowing it, as long as there is a cover on the box and ample room inside.

Greg, ask the inspector were that's at in the NEC book. I work at a factory and we do a lot of what you are doing. We do automation on robots and more.

We use 8x8 boxes for lighting contactors all of the time with no problems. Even in Maryland. What County?

Hoffman and Stahlin enclosures are made for this application. I've installed contactors in both fiberglass and metal enclosures and have passed inspection. I have even used JBs from the local home improvement megamart and passed with no problem. I thought it was "me" the inspectors were after.
