hi everyone,

i'm new to the forum and this website is great. there is a vast surplus of information here.

the company i am working with was just awarded a contract to build several control panels with plc's and other control panel items.

the wire they are planning to use is new to me and a type that i haven't heard of before.

the label on the wire spool read ul mtw 1015/1230 CSA TEW. the next line said something about applience wire. another spool had TEW, CSA - AWM.

the wire appears to be aluminum, but they say it is soft copper.

i cannot find any reference in the nec or NFPA 79 for this type of wire (TEW & AWM). is this a valid type of wire for control panel construction or are the manufacturers of the panels looking at cost saving methods to get the job done?

any help would be much appreciated.

thank you in advance,
james

Re: control panel wiring

If you're interested in control wiring get a copy of NFPA 79, Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery. My reference is 1997 and may have been updated again. Art. 5 Conductors, talks about the requirements thermoplastics for insulation and conductor characteristics, etc.

Re: control panel wiring

Just bought some of the same wire..... it is MTW insulation and it is tinned copper wire that is why it looks like al wire

Re: control panel wiring

The other standard for control panels is UL 508A. Its similar to NFPA 79, but its for industrial control panels. Keep in mind you can use (under UL 508A) THHN, as it is dual listed MTW. But most panel shops use MTW, its easier to work with in panels. There are also specific color codes for the type of wires functions...
