Here is one I found today.

An A/C condensing unit on a pad in the rear of a commercial building.
The disconnect contained the usual power conductors plus the control cable from the furnace to the condenser. This cable entered the disco with the power conductors and left with the power conductors in the same raceway.

Is this a Red Tag?

Re: Control wires

Maybe, maybe not. :D

Dave as I understand it, this would be OK if the control wires are rated for the voltage of the supply conductors.

300.3(C)(1)

And if the control conductors are treated as a chapter 3 installation the rest of the way back to the furnace.

725.52(A) Exception 2.

I doubt that what you saw complies. :D

Re: Control wires

From what you describe, it sounds like a violation.

This violates 725.55(A). Unless 725.55(B) or 725.55(D) requirements have been met. However, I do suppose the 725.52(A)(Ex2) could apply as stated by Bob. :)

Re: Control wires

Hi Bob and Bryan,

Thanks for your responses. Here is the part that in this scenario I think would be hard to accomplish if using the Exp.#2
Handbook note:
Where it is necessary to locate Class 2 or Class 3 circuits inside the same cable or raceway as a Class 1 circuit, 725.52(A), Exception No. 2, permits a Class 2 or Class 3 circuit to be reclassified and installed as Class 1, providing that the Class 2 or Class 3 marking is removed, that overcurrent protection is provided in accordance with 725.23, and that the reclassified circuit maintains separation from other Class 2 and Class 3 circuits in accordance with 725.55.
Do any of you guys get installs passed using this method in the exception or does the inspector not catch this?

Thanks!

PS. Red Tag.
