I've been looking at the controlled receptacles offered through manufacturers such as - Legrand (P&S) and Leviton. Does anyone know why the "controlled" text and symbol engraving is only properly viewed when the receptacle is inverted ? I typically wouldn't invert a receptacle unless noted on the drawings or called out in project specifications typical for healthcare facilities in my area.

That's interesting. While there is no requirement for ground up or down, the majority of us install receptacles ground pin down. So, I can't imagine why they would do something like that.

According to NEMA, ground-up is the "official" position, which is why we usually see it in commercial work.

Also, some electricians mount residential controlled receptacles ground up to make them easier to locate.

The American Electrician's Handbook, at least the edition I have, says that ground-up is preferred because if a metal plate comes off while a plug is inserted, it will hit the ground pin and not arc. Similarly, horizontal mounted receptacles should be neutral-up.
