I was told the conversion for changing kilowatts to btu's was to multiply by 3.4 . So if i have a 5kw electric 240v heater it would be a 17,000 BTU heater. Can anyone confirm this? Thank you.

In a little conversion app I found, 5 kw is equal to 17,075.9 BTU/hr, in the power converter.

It also says that 5 kw/hr is equal to 17060.71 BTU, and this is in the energy converter.

Obviously, one has time in it, and one does not. Therefor, there's no direct conversion.

Added: But, yes, to your question, for all practical purposes.

to be more precise, the BTU is a measure of energy. The watt is a measure of energy per second. So for a given conversion, a watt would equal a given number of BTUs per second, or BTUs would equal watts times a given length of time.
