I'm on a USACE asking for 40o lumens on emergency lights.

Question can this be measured by using a meter that reads "LUX" it is my understanding this apples and oranges ?

The old measurement was always in ft candles which equaled lumens.

Yes, you cannot convert from one to the other without specifying a geometry.
And for most safety purposes the light level in lux at a particular location is what is specified. To decide what lumen output from a set of fixtures delivers that light level depends both on the dpatial distribution of the output and the distance and direction to the measurement location.

You may be able to get the lumens info from the manufacturer of the emergency light. That info may or may not be on the spec sheet. If that fails, try to get it from the bulb manufacturer.

It is not something you can measure with a lux meter. As others have said, lux = lumens/ area you measuring upon. A building code is going to specify lighting levels in lux or footcandle but that does not mean you can't satisfy the corps.

One example of when something may specify lumens in lieu of lux or fc is a beacon light which needs to be viewed from a specific distance or in particular conditions, or both.

It always takes a little extra work to satisfy the corps, but they're good pay!
