I have purchased an inexpensive 3.6 KW Champion generator for brief weather related power outages in my home. My thought was to use the standard L14-30 connection on the fuse box using two 30 amp brakers. But the generator only has a NEMA L5 and a NEMA TT-30 on it, each capable of 30 amps. My thought here is to make up a cable with two male connectors on one end (NEMA L5 Male, and NEMA TT -30 Male) and on the other end use a standard NEMA 3R 30 amp to connect into the fuse box. All grounds would tied together, and be bonded to the frame of the unit. The house uses very little power as we use gas for cooking and drying clothes, and have no water pump. Heat is FHW and consumes very little, so the smaller unit is fine except for connections. I prefer not to use a transfer switch box as they are limited to only a few circuits. Can someone comment on my approach here? Should be fine, right?
