Converting a safety switch.

Hello all,

I have a 100 amp fused safety switch that I'm moving to a new location. It will be hooked up to a welding machine. We have had in the past issues with one leg blowing and the machines buzzing like an angry bee. What I'm trying to figure out is can I convert this to a non fused switch fed to a breaker by removing the fuses and replacing with copper busbar. We don't want to have to purchase a non fused switch. Obviously the load side will be where the bus is connected so when the handle is thrown the busbar will be de-energized. Just trying to figure out if code allows this. Every time I open the book I get a headache.

I think is possible there could be more of an issue with listing and what is allowed to be put in the fuse holders then there is an NEC issue here.
 
I haven't really thought about it, but would it be compliant to protect the circuit with a properly-sized breaker and put larger fuses in the disconnect? Would definitely want a sign, either in or outside the switch, explaining the larger-than-usual fuses.

'course, this depends on the cost of the fuses vs an unfused switch.

Only problem is you can't put over 100 amp fuses in a 100 amp fuse holder. You could use that logic more easily for a 40 -60 amp circuit but put fuse reducers in 100 amp fuse holders.
 
Yeah the whole deal is we keep disconnects at each machine, shut it down at the end of the day. We just weren't trying to spend an additional $200. I can get bus sized the same as the ears on the Buss non100's that were in there for like 10 bucks. I guess I should talk to GE engineering.
