This may be a ridiculous question, but is it physically (and electrically, of course) possible to convert an existing 2500kVA double ended substation to a single ended sub? Understanding that it would take some major re-work of the bussing and a New sheet metal closure at the end, but is this even a feasible thought?

Why?

Assuming 480V secondary you will probably need a 5000A main breaker which are rare and expensive. All you metering and relays will need to be replaced, etc....So you will spend a ton of money to get a less reliable system.

The double ended sub has (2) - 4000A. Main Breakers and a 4000A. Tie....

What are you trying to accomplish?
Do you want a single 4000A main breaker feeding both 'sides' of the equipment, or are you trying to get more than 4000A from the gear?
