A contractor called me today to ask if it was allowed under the NEC for a drop-in electric cooktop to share a base cabinet with a drop-in SS sink. He said there would be 1/2" between the cooktop edge and the SS sink edge. I don't think it is prohibited but I always have trouble finding code articles that tell you what you CAN do. Anybody have a thought which includes a code reference?

Sounds fine to me. I don't think that you'll find a prohibition of this in the NEC.
