Re: Copalum

I wonder if the insurance companies providing liability insurance to ECs would approve of this?

Somewhere in the back of my brain, I seem to recall that part of the deal when using these things is that the manufacturer's insurance company has provided some specialized liability insurance, something akin to, but not quite making the EC installing these things a named insured.

Re: Copalum

A few months back I was inspecting a project where the EC installed about 6000 of them.
He sent his men to the manufacturer's class, leased their crimper and had to buy their product, or no certification - not a bad deal for Tyco.
There is no other place on this good earth to purchase Copalum products.
BTW - making good splices with this equipment is not always easy, and some had to be remade.

What kind of a job required 6000 of the things shown on your link to TYCO and didn't warrant just rippin out the aluminum wire?

Re: Copalum

157 condos that are wired in Aluminum.
Actually it is was more like 12,000.

157 x40 (locations per unit) = 6280
6280 x 2 (splices) = 12560 Copalum connections.

It took a crew of (average) 4, 7 months.

The kind of job that the person footing the bill could not afford the very major price difference between ripping all the AL out or just fixing the connections. :D

It almost seems like someones got this issue in the bag, from my understanding there's only one supplier of these crimps. Well i'm one to find the easy way out, instead of rewiring the unit, could'nt you just replace the devices with a (aluminum grade) receptacle or toggle switch? if not, why do they manufacture them?
