I know that the NEC forbids this, however, our friends in the western states would likely disagree.

But I was thinking about this today: Would any of you have a problem with a cord connected furnace/boiler so it could be easily connected to a back-up generator?

(FYI: All furnaces and boilers in this area are hardwired)

Why not just install one of these?

So peter you have yet to wire a Viessman boiler? They come with a factory cord...

No, haven't wired a Viessman, but I have seen a Viessmann install and I was surprised to see that it came with a cord.

As for the inlet box, why spend the money when a cord costs $5? (Spoken like a true Yankee)

I remember a couple of warm air gas furnaces that did have a factory cord kit available, according to the install book. That's about the only way I'd be comfortable giving such an installation my blessing, from a liability standpoint. I know I could put a cord on and it would be okay, but if anything bad ever happened, I'm on the hook for it. It would either need to come with a cord already on it or have a factory kit available.

You're under the mistaken impression that you're spending the money. Unless this is for your own house, you're not. If they want to run a genny cord in for the furnace, they gotta pay to make it a legal install.

How much are you going to make on markup with 5 dollars worth of material?

Not much obviously. I was just more interested if anyone was comfortable with this kind of install for their own home, for instance. This isn't an issue for me as my boiler runs on millivoltage. :D

I really don't have a problem with a cord in a basement, but since I've never done one, I doubt i'll start tomorrow...

Peter, why do you think you only wire boilers and related equipment with MC cable? Will any other wiring method instantly self destruct?

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at. I think we wire boilers and furnaces around here with pipe and MC cable by tradition, not because other wiring methods are inferior.
