where in the NEC is the requirement spelled out regarding the need to have a drop-out contactor installed on a machine such as a Bridgepor mill?
I know why it is needed. Just want to read it.

Re: cord and plug connected machinery

You won't find it in the NEC. The NEC does not address how equipment is to be designed or operated, nor does it give the safety rules for the equipment. The NEC is only concerned with the building's wiring.

Re: cord and plug connected machinery

I don't entirely agree. What about article 422? And I also think article 430 might also apply. 422.3 says article 430 applies to the installation of motor-operated appliances. (I'm not exactly sure what a drop out contactor is, is it possible that it is the required disconnecting means?)

I know the NEC says they don't cover the design or use of appliances, but what about 422.45? Can anyone deny that covers the design of a clothes iron?

I just don't think the NEC is practicing what it is preaching.

A drop out contactor is a device that prevents a motor from restrting automatically after a loss of power. These are commonly used on mixers, drill presses, table saws, and other devices where you might have your hand where it shouldn't be during a return of power. there are many ways to accomplish this protection, a contactor is only one of them.

The NEC does not require these. OSHA does require them. Many local building codes also require them especially in school "shop" classrooms.

Jim is absolutely right. Our city inspector is requiring a "drop-out contactor" on certain equipment in our plant. It is costing $110.00 per machine plus labor. What other ways are there to accomplish this requirement?

Re: cord and plug connected machinery

There is a company that makes cords with integral low voltage protection. You simply replace your existing device cord with one of these units.

I think one product is Saf-T-Start from JDS.
