Hi, everyone.

Do I need an individual branch circuit and am I even allowed to install a cord connected hood if my amendment says:
NYC amendment
422.16 (B)(4) Replace the term ‘range hood’ with the term ‘combination range hood/microwave oven’ in the title, first paragraph and exception.

nec
422.16 (B)(4)
(4) Range Hoods. Range hoods shall be permitted to be cord-and-plug-connected with a flexible cord identified as suitable for use on range hoods in the installation instruc- tions of the appliance manufacturer, where all of the fol- lowing conditions are met:
(1) The flexible cord is terminated with a grounding-type attachment plug.
Exception: A listed range hood distinctly marked to iden- tify it as protected by a system of double insulation, or its equivalent, shall not be required to be terminated with a grounding-type attachment plug.
(2) The length of the cord is not less than 450 mm (18 in.) and not over 900 mm (36 in.).
(3) Receptacles are located to avoid physical damage to the flexible cord.
(4) The receptacle is accessible.
(5) The receptacle is supplied by an individual branch circuit.

Thank you in advance.

I suggest you ask an inspector. You are more likely to get a correct answer.

My interpretation is if it's a range hood and not a combo with microwave, then section 422.16(B)(4) no longer applies. Therefore a range hood would not need an individual branch circuit. I don't believe you could hook it up to the small appliance kitchen circuits however, since those rules are specific in what is allowed to be connected and I don't believe range hood is allowed.

Since there is no longer a section specifically for range hoods, there is no longer a discussion of whether it should be plug connected. Since the document is permissive, I believe you can use a cord and plug since it's not disallowed.

I agree that I don’t need an individual branch circuit .
Mwbc is a no no . General lights circuit is ok.
My hood comes with a 3’ cord so I’m not concerned much .
if it wasn’t I would hardwire the hood.
nobody around here would try to attach a cord to a hood.
