I noticed in a few supermarkets they have gray cord coming out of conduit (rmc/emt) at the ceiling with a cord grip / strain relief on the end, conduit appears to look like a chase through the ceiling tile. No cord above ceiling, but how then is the cord being terminated in jbox?

They may be using the conduit as a sleeve to comply with article 400.12 (or .10 ). Where uses not permitted states flexible cords shall not be above a suspended ceiling.

The way I have seen it done is the cord terminates in a junction box through the conduit acting as a sleeve

There very well may be a Section I've missed but it seems 400.14 for industrial establishments is the only place that is allowed.
