Unable to find the max length that a flexible cord can be attached to a fluorescent fixture. 120v with male cord end. Am trying to utilize existing ceiling receptacles if they are within code allowance.

No, but when it is used instead of a whip?

I'm not arguing with you, I'll most likely learn something. Then my head will hurt for a week.......

For what it is worth I do not believe you will find 'whip' in the NEC.

In other words not worth worrying about local trade slang. :)

I wasn't presenting any particular opinion, just trying to wrap my head around the question as well. To my way of thinking, a whip is hardwired, so a cord automatically wouldn't fall into that category. I've seen lots of resi basements wired with switched outlets for plug-in shop lights and more and more products are being sold with cords of various types on them for faster installation so the question is interesting and valid.

I believe the 6 feet limit on flexible metal conduit (which enters most people's minds) is not the maximum length allowed for the raceway, but rather is the maximum length it can be run unsupported. This gives many of us an assumed general rule that the max length in all cases is 6 feet.

You also have a maximum length of 6 feet if the flex is used for the equipment grounding conductor to throw into the confusion, but most pre-made "whips" have an EGC installed in them and really is not an issue with those either.
