Re: cord length

See 410.30(C). There are restrictions on the installation, but cord length isn't among them. Someone will be along in two minutes to refute this. :)

I would have said 6' too, since that's the longest pre-made cord I can recall seeing! :)

Re: cord length

I think it can be any length if you decided to makeup the cord and plug for the fixture. Also the rules of 430.30(C) would apply. 410.30(C)(1)(2) makes for some good installation practice.

Re: cord length

I see nothing in the design of HID that would inherently limit the cord length.
I have seen factory-made mc-style whips up to 20 ft. long.
Of greater concern is that the flexible cord not be adjacent to anything hot- like the fixture. Some HID call for 105 degree wire, and I am not aware of any flexible cord that meets that.
I am also concerned about using a temporary wiring method for a permanent installation.

Re: cord length

Just because cord is allowed as a temporary wiring method, it does not mean the all cord installations are temporary wiring. Many industrial fixtures are connected with cord.

Re: cord length

buzzlectric,
Have you looked over art.400 yet? 400-8.(1)&(4)
Also there are other art.'s that limit cord use to 6'-8' max.

1. High bays seem to be cord connected all the time. It's expressly permitted in 410.30. It's not temporary wiring, it's completing assembly of a device in the field.

2. Is there one that applies to this situation?

Re: cord length

So your Implying that you could run...say 100ft of cord to connect a HID Luminar?

Re: cord length

Cord length seems to be unlimited vertically because 410.30(C) only requires the light to be directly below the outlet box. But it does require the cord to be visible it's entire length.

Re: cord length

Start with 410.14 (A) & (B). That will take you to 410.30(B) & (C). Common sense will tell you to make the cord so it makes the outlet box that should be located directly above the light. The cord shall not be subject to strain OR physical damage. I really don't think a good electrian is going in make the cord 100'or anymore more than he has to. I think evryone as the correct answer but it's just how you apply it. But again, I didn't see anything a the length but will look a little hard.
Bye now,
Jim
