I am the electrical engineer on a commercial roof-replacement project. In surveying the roof I noticed a security light fixture that is plugged into a receptacle. The receptacle appears to be in compliance with the code (GFI w/ WP cover).

I assume that the 08 NEC does not allow exterior wet-location permanently-installed luminaires to be cord-and-plug connected. Seems like common sense. But cannot find anything in the code that says otherwise.

Also noticed some exterior security cameras installed with cord and plug.

The client may not want to correct the deficiency unless it is a code violation. It is possible that they even prefer to keep these items plugged for ease of reconfiguring. Don't know, but I have a call in to them. In the meantime any code citations you know of are appreciated. Thanks.

What type of security lights are we talking about?

Take a look at 410.62 in the 2008 NEC or 410.30 of the 2005 NEC.
