Cords in raceway

I was wondering if someone could help me with a question that just will not seem to go away. Recently I informed a customer that I could not sleeve the cord of a neon lighted advertisement sign in a piece of wire mold to a location just above the receptacle. I understand the customer wanted to clean up the installation by hiding the dangling cord, but I had to inform them that per ART 400 (uses not permitted) I could not do that. I hope I wasn't wrong. Since I don't have an Electrical Inspector here in Japan you are my only source of knowledge. I was also wondering why it is permitted to install romex in a raceway and not a cord.

Re: Cords in raceway

Cords may not be used in place of the fixed wiring, nor can they be attached to the building except for those that hang from busway. The reason is the allowed ampacity is different from a wiring method, and the structure of a cord is such that it needs to be exposed along it's entire length for inspection, and noticing of wear.
You can run wiremold as an extensiion from the receptacle to a location near to the appliance. Just use building wire (THHN or THWN) to "clean up the installation".

Re: Cords in raceway

I was just at a IAEI meeting and we had a UL engineer there. We were discussing Puck lights. His reason for not installing flexible cord in a raceway was that the cord could catch on fire and wick the fire through the conduit to other areas. the cord has not been tested for its fire properties in conduit.

Re: Cords in raceway

...Check out Wiremold "CordMate".

That can't be approved. Just because somebody sells something doesn't mean that it has the blessing of the NEC. Looks like that is aimed at the DIY market to deal with a common problem.

Re: Cords in raceway

If you click on the bottom of their page it explains that all wiremold products unless specifically noted are listed by UL inc. and conform to federal spec's W-C-582 and the NEC.

Re: Cords in raceway

This stuff appears to not be "raceway" in the sense of WireMold. Its more an open channel without any means of termination or interfacability (beyond its own linkable sections).

UL listed or not, tts gotta be better than the usual duct tape or scary staple gun methods people always use :D

Re: Cords in raceway

Says big orange has it,will try to see some next time there and see if it UL listed. This looks dangerous,i can just see the abuse that will follow.

Re: Cords in raceway

Jimwalker ,if you read Tonys post and go to the link that he provided there is a section on the bottom of the page,
LIMITATION OF LIIBILITY AND TRADEMARKS.
click on that info, and it will explain what I wrote last night .
