We're in the market for a hand held core boring drill. Any experiences (good or bad) with particular brands?

I like Hilti, Bosch tools are good too. I guess you are looking for dry hammer core, I think 3 inch is the biggest you can get in a hand held. Then wet core with bolt or vacuum stand type. Check ebay for prices, you can get some good deals at time there.

It depends on what you're coring. What material are you going through, what size bore, and how thick is the material you're coring?

I use the Hilti hand held wet/dry coring machine. We go through a 12" foundation wall with a 2 1/2" wet core bit in about 10 minutes without the hammer drill noise. Same results with the dry core through cinder block. Nothing better.

Contractors I've worked for use Core Bore products. In fact I can't recall ever using a non-Core Bore rig for any core bore job... YMMV
