A question on a residential wiring method according to 2011 Code. If I use a combination AFCI circuit breaker, can I use romex leaving the panel to the first device. I thought you had to use metallic raceway or MC cable only if your were using a branch circuit AFCI. Thank you in advance!

You are correct according to NCE unless your jurisdiction says otherwise.

I agree with Lucky. In your case romex is okay. The wire/cable assembly is only required to be in metallic if it was not protected by AFCI. For what you have described, it would only make sense to use metal on the entire circuit where required by the AHJ. Not just to the first one.

First, Welcome! to the Forum.

Next, language is everything, especially here. And the language of our work, and how we assemble stuff into an "approved" thing guided only by the printed word, can get a little demanding at times.

When you write "branch circuit AFCI", I assume you are meaning "Outlet Branch Circuit" (OBC) AFCI? Rather than "Branch / Feeder" AFCI, which, under the 2011 NEC, has no place to be used. The "Branch / Feeder" AFCI was the first type of AFCIs that were only available as circuit breakers. The OBC AFCI is a yoke mounted device that can be installed in a wall case and can be a blank front, receptacle, or the like.
