A builder/contractor that I grew up next to got busted for doing electrical work without a license. I had heard stories of him useing people and not paying them, ect. He called me the other day and said that one of the terms of his probation was to hire an EC to pull a permit, check out the work he did, fix any problems, and get the permit finaled. He said it was for a 240v wall heater he wired into a house. I asked him if it was only the heater that he wired, he said yes, I asked him if he did any thing wrong that he knows of, he said no. After hearing stories about him ripping off other people I told him 500$ up front and I would charge him more if it involved more work. I took his 500 and filed a permit hopeing that I would be able to schedule a day to meet the inspector there to see if I could get the job done in 1 trip. The other day our state board of electricity called me and asked if I had filed a permit for the job, I said yes, he asked if I had been paid, I told him I had, then the guy (an old inspector in our area that I know) said how do you plan on fixing all of this for 500? I said its only a heater if its more than 500 it cant be much more. He said only a heater! The contractor wired the entire house and the list of violations was pretty long. The service was in a crawl space and needed to be moved, no dedicated 20 amp circuits anywhere, no gfi's or afci's in the entire house, no boxes behind light fixtures, no RI inspection so the inspector wanted all the walls opened(tounge and groove) and the list went on and on. The contractor had submitted his paperwork stateing that he had paid me in full to do the work. I cancelled my permit and will give him some of his 500 back minus headache fees.

I would make sure his probation officer learns of this asap. Obviously he has not learned his lesson and needs some confined time to think about it, and does not deserve the second chance he was given.

I hope you filed the filled out the permit yourself, and made sure it was for the Heater only. Some of these CG's will try anything, they will tell you electrical work is not rocket science, but what they dont tell you is, thre IQ score is usually off the scale -1000
Send a certified return receipt letter to the AJH, so if the home burns and killes a family of 6 you will have proof on file.

My permit was for the heater only. He thought that once I filed a permit I would be obligated to do the entire job. I have only had my contractors license for a little over a year and I do have a lot to learn, Im just glad that this one was easy to get out of. The area inspector said the person that turned him in was a different sub that didnt get paid.

Work is hard to find but you saved yourself lots of headaches and possibly money by not excepting the job.

I definitely don't think you should give all of it back. Give him a proposal to repair everything so when he doesn't except your proposal which includes the crooked tax he will be backing out not you.

I don't pull permits for no-body....In fact its not really legal in Okra-homa. I wouldnt want the liability of his work, no-way.

What a friend that guy is.....and he hasnt learned a thing yet, and unfortunately he has to learn a lesson...

return the money, less a service call, and wash your hands from it.....
