Can anyone tell me what the purpose of a CT cabinet is?

In what cases would you NEED to install a CT meter and CT cabinet? Is this only for applications with large motors etc?

Would the utility company require you put on in?

Sorry to load this up with so many questions but its been bugging me, and now im designing a job going into a building with an existing CT cabinet..

Thanks

So in like a strip mall situation where every tenant has their own meter, it would typically not be required unless they have greater then a 400A service (depending on location). Strip malls always have over a 400A service, but the 400A service itself is not metered, the individual tenant spaces are which are say, 200 amps. Sound right?

Thanks for the replies.

You will find the requirements vary based mainly on POCO.
I deal with several POCOs, some will meter without CT up to 600 amp (single phase), others require at anything over 400.
It's all voltage and current Dependant and based on their standards and
metering equipment available.
In some of the malls locally the PowerCo installs CTs in there transformer as a "check" meter to see if all the Tennant meters add up to theirs.
