I can not understand why the big price hike between 14-2 and 12-2. looks like cooper prices are going to get sky high once again

12/2 MC is cheaper than 14/2 MC in lowes by me.

I guess they don't sell a lot of 14/2

Good question. Maybe we couldn't handle the math if #12 was rated 22.5 amps. It does work out though for the size that is double the copper of #14.
