Re: custom lighting

My AHJ requires all fixtures to have an ICBO # or at least a UL bug.

Re: custom lighting

It is not required to use UL listed fixtures. However, the AHJ (inspector) may require a third party to verify they are safe to use. That is what the listing does is take the responsibility out of the AHJ's hands to determine whether or not a piece of equipment is safe to use.

If you go ahead without the AHJ's approval, you may be required to have a field evaluation done by a NRTL. A field evaluation is where you will pay for UL or another NRTL to go to the job site and evaluate a (or several) piece of equipment for safety. In other words, check with the local AHJ before starting the bid process. Most of the time, you will find the AHJ to be your friend with an agenda. His agenda is to have every installation he inspects to be safe. :)

Re: custom lighting

See definitions of "approved" and "listed" in NEC Article 100. If something is listed, then it is (generally) approved for use. If it is not listed, the AHJ can accept it, and it is then approved (or not...).
