I’m running into supply issues for large pull boxes. I need (4) very soon. Can I have a local metal shop make them? Do pull boxes have to be UL Listed?

They would, of course, need to be Approved by local jurisdiction but I don't know that they need to be listed. See Art 314 Part III for construction specs and marking.

(Metal wieways & auxiliary gutters used outdoors must be listed)

I believe non metallic boxes, wireways, etc. must all be listed. Of course anything requiring hazardous location ratings also needs to be listed.

The supplier for the company I previously work for, had a vendor that could custom make any size we needed. That was Graybar, since they are nationwide, you might check with them on availability.

My opinion is yes, as long as they are metal and conform to type 1 requirements.

Incidentally, there are a lot of custom enclosure manufacturers who can make these and even apply a UL label.

My shop has a CNC laser and CNC press brake. We fold up our control enclosure cabinets all the time from 14ga steel, and assemble with pop rivets. DM me if you need something made; we're in NJ just across from NYC so relatively close to you. Ours aren't UL listed, but we meet the requirements for Type 1 enclosures. No one's ever said boo, and we have these enclosures installed all over the world in various venues.

Looking through art 312, it clearly says non metallic ones need to be listed, no such language in 314.

There is construction specifications in both 312 and 314. Why bother publishing this if all such units are required to be listed? The listing standards would be sufficient. I see nothing restricting non listed to just indoor boxes either.

We had a local metal shop make custom boxes, covers, and top hats for large gear.

Makes sense that non-metallic would have to be listed to insure their strength and durability.

At my previous employer, they had one guy that would splice in a coffee can, and fill it with silicone! I always hated going behind him to figure out where he buried the coffee can!
