Have done a few post and beam homes where all the woodwork was exposed. To run romex for luminaries, I've had to run the wires on the woodwork and have had the carpenters make a wood wire mold to hide and protect them. Is this in violation of any NEC codes?

As it is NM Cable you might have an issue with 300.4(A)(2) or 300.4(D) or 300.4(E).

All of which could be fixed with nail plates or switching to EMT, RNC, IMC or RMC. ;)

I would opt for EMT.

Ever the devil's advocate, I would offer the idea that perhaps nails and screws would not be likely to penetrate "custom wire mold" installed on a finished ceiling. ;) :D

How about painting regular wire mold?

I disagree, why is it any less likely the carpenters drive a nail into the NM when building the box around them then sheet rockers screwing into NMs that they just covered with rock?

nails/screws

nails/screws

i would opt for a boxout that would give you 1.25" as if it were any other type of wood member
