Will a 50hz hottub or anything else for that matter run on 60hz?Thank you for your help.:)

besides the 50hz issue, is the thing listed by a recognized testing lab? if its 50hz only, its not for use in the USA and probably doesnt carry the necessary approvals.....

I'd look very carefully for third party certification. UL,FM etc. Make sure that if it's there that it is not counterfeit!

so what is the effect on appliances being supplied..

with 50hz when it should be 60hz?

Considering the lack of quality of products coming out of China would you trust your life or your families lives to something that will not even have some 3rd party testing??? That does not even take into account it's not made for the US market.......

If the pump was designed for 50hz and you are running it at 60hz it will be doing more work and likely trip the overloads if there are any.

It looks like the horsepower requirements for a centrifugal pump changes with the cube of the change in speed. That would require 1.7 times as much horsepower when you run the 50hz pump motor on 60hz.

Yea, like they would put in overloads. It should be just like running it on a freq drive, except speeding it up instead slowing it down, amp draw would increase some. Just hit me, install a freq drive to run the motors and your problem is solved! Lets see X# of freq drives plus installation, that cheap hot tub just got expensive.

Yes, a lot of Hot tubs are not tested or labled, and they get by the inspection process, because the homeowner or installer never files for a permit, they just don't get the liability issues, every year we get a dozen or so calls asking what we can do, the city inspector turned down the installation, there is not much we can do, except advise the Ho to return the tub. then they go on to tell you they bought it from a big company that advertises on TV so they must be labled and approved.

I can find nothing in the NEC requiring a Hot tub to be listed.

I never did either, then why are they turned down? were told the ones they failed did not have a label, and they din't.

Most inspectors will insist on third party certification (UL,FM,Etl etc.) Inspectors inspect for many reasons but safety is probably number one. Section 90.4 gives inspectors the responsibility for deciding on the approval of equipment and materials. As an inspector I require third party certification. The testing involved in listing and labeling equipment is well beyond my capibilities. When I see a UL sticker on a piece of equipment not just the internal componets I know that it is listed as a package. Now we can go to section 110.3(B). As an electrician the code does not say that a hot tub shall be listed but most inspectors will require third party certification. How many electricians would hook a piece of equipment (Hot Tub) that was homemade in a neighbors garage?

I don't know how you can speak for most inspectors.

What other items do you require to be listed that the NEC does not?

I don't know of any that would not require third party certification. I can't speak for anyone except myself. I follow the NEC for all electrical equipment that needs to be listed but when I run into an unusual case I'll use section 90.4 and require third party certification. I do not have a specific list of items that I require to be listed.
