To me residential is harder to deal with than commercial. Most commercial company if you tell them ok we are done for the day, ok see you tomorrow. Residential customer not so fast you are not done. I need my trench covered, lawn cleaned up etc. I understand this apart of the job but if you are done for the day. Are you really required to stay and make owner happy? Unless it's in contract I don't think they really have any business telling you to hurry up and finish. Am I wrong?

I would often tell them they didn't want me there any longer as I was tired and prone to mistakes, and mistakes can cause fires!
They never complained after that!

I like to stop working 30 minutes before knock off time so we can clean up and leave the job site as good as it can get for the state it's in. Pick up your tools or leave large equipment parked out of the way. A little explanation of what is to be expected if the job will take multiple days goes a long way.

If it's going to be a multi-day job, you should discuss these details ahead of time.
Not always possible, here's a few reasons:

You run into unexpected things

If you have to troubleshoot, it might take longer than expected

You just plain underestimated the time it would take

ETC.

I try set expectations (as much as possible) with the customer so even when there is surprise they are not surprised.
Of course there are some people who can be a PIA.
We do or best to work with them.
