A few guys I work with asked me today if cut-in boxes were only allowed to be used for switches. I guess one of them noticed the box that these came in said "switch boxes" and not outlet boxes. I am not aware of any code requirement for this but maybe it has something to do with the listing of these boxes.

All of the cut-in boxes that I have ever used are fine to use with either a receptacle or switch or as just a simple old splice box without a device.

The only code section that I can think of that would not alow a switch to be installed in the box would be 110.3(B) if the box listing didn't allow a switch to be installed.

Just don't cut in a double gang old work box and then put two switches in them with 480 volts between them without a divider like I did recently.

I have used hundreds of them and never a problem. But if the listing says switches only then you need to be nice to the inspector or buy another brand.

As far as buying a different brand that is a problem since I have now looked at four different brands and they all say switch box on them. I almost wonder if this is just a name for these types of boxes. If I install a handy box I don't put a hand in it.......

Ryan, could you please give a code section as to cut-in boxes not allowed in fire-rated walls. I believe I know the reason but as you well know as an inspector that will not be enough. Thanks

It is a UL listing. Not sure where.

OK I've seen the picture and looked it up more than once, but for the life of me I can't find it right now.

It states that boxes must be securly fastened to the structure. The box becomes part of the listed assembly.

UL Fire resistance directory (Orange book) Volume 1. Section BXUV, Part IV, Item 6.

...The metallic outlet or switch boxes shall be securely fastened to the studs...
