D-day

Yes, 65 years ago today. For the many who don't know too much about the history of the D-day invasion it's just another day. For others it marks the greatest battle in the history of civilization.

Our local paper today had an article with interviews from four D-day survivors. It's almost unimaginable what they went through.

My hat's off to all of them, those who came home and those who didn't.

There were some good specials on the History Channel yesterday, I'm sure there will be more today for those that enjoy watching that sort of thing.

Yes, thanks to all.

I spent a good part of the day on the LST 393 which was part of the Normandy Invasion. Even at her age, the technology used in building the ship still amazes me.

For those that don't know, an LST is a heavy equipment carrier that actually lands on shore. The front opens and a ramp drops and then the tanks, trucks, cranes, etc. are simply driven out of the ship onto land. When finished, a huge anchor that was dropped prior to landing is used to pull the ship off land. And this is a big ship!

I can't even imagine what it was like to go through that day.

I watched a lot of shows about D-Day on the History Channel, and after
each one I sit back, shake my head,as I'm absolutly amazed that anyone
survived that battle. True Hero's IMO.

This was a monumental event indeed.

Personally I've been fascinated with the Battle of Stalingrad. I've read several books on it. I believe it is considered the largest and bloodiest battle ever - over 1.5 million casualties. And a turning point in the European front.
