If daisy chaining residential outlets with romex and metal boxes.
if the IN and OUT ground wires are pigtailed with a third wire which will be directly connected to the outlet (3wires total pigtail) is this acceptable or must a fourth wire also be used and connected to the metal box as well (4 wires total pigtail)

not sure if this is an unnecessary redundancy?
thanks

I don't know how others do it but I sta-kon the grounds together and run one to the box and the other to the receptacle.

You could just wrap one around the box grounding screw and then do like electricman2 said. Don't really need a separate wire going to the box and a separate one to the receptacle. We just always left one long and crimped the other together.

No matter how you do it you will need a direct connection of the EGC (or pigtail) to the box. If you connect solely to the box you can use a self-grounding receptacle.
