Is it permissible to use a box such as a Raco 192 (4" sq) box under an outside canopy ?
The NEC notes that such areas are deemed "lamp locations" in definitions.
314.15 simply states in damp and wet locations boxes should be mounted to prevent water for entering or accumulating. 314.15 also states that boxes in WET locations must be so listed, but no listing requirement for DAMP location boxes..
However, UL QCIT (pg 294 UL '10 White Book) for metallic outlet boxes states that "Damp location boxes and covers are intended to be so located....... and are marked 'damp location' "
I find no such marking on Raco or Steel City standard 4" boxes.

Although I don't believe the 4" square is rated for damp location and I don't believe it is a legal install. I will say that I have seen it all over the place and have not really seen any problems. It seems any moisture can exit easily enough.

I have never had a problem with it myself, but today an E/C asked me to confirm that it was Code compliant and the UL book threw me a curve.
