I am currently working on a building for the military in Afghanistan. It's an ablution block, consisting of showers, toilets, and sinks. The electrical portion has ended up being surface mounted EMT, as the building is constructed of solid concrete walls. As it happens, a suspended ceiling has been installed. The military has consultants that supervise these projects. The consultant is telling me that all of the boxes above the suspended ceiling, cannot be steel 4 square boxes, and need to be weatherproof bell boxes, because the area above the suspended ceiling is considered to be a "damp location??" There is no plumbing in the ceiling void, nor will steam travel into the void. I'm pushing for 4 squares, he wants weatherproof, am I in the wrong?

Here's the NEC definition. What do you think?

Location, Damp. Locations protected from weather and not subject to saturation with water or other liquids but subject to moderate degrees of moisture. Examples of such locations include partially protected locations under canopies, marquees, roofed open porches, and like locations, and interior locations subject to moderate degrees of moisture, such as some basements, some barns, and some cold-storage warehouses.

I know what the NEC definition is. I believe it doesn't fall into that category. Your post came across more as being condescending than helpfull...

Sorry if it came across that way. I wasn't trying to be condescending but there is no mention of the definition or your particular knowledge of it in your original post.

So let's start over. :)

The answer is no, it's not a damp location by the Article 100 NEC definition.

I am sure you know this, but make sure its not in job specs or on drawings to install bell boxes.

And, if it is not in the job specs, you certainly have a very good case for an added cost change order as no reasonable bidder would have cause to thing that would be a requirement.
